Pontoon Fishing Boats
Pontoon fishing boats are great for single anglers. There are also 2 man fishing boats that use the same design and we have covered them on a separate page. The single person boats give you several advantages.
They are portable, can be used on waters that are off limits for drift boats and full sized rafts and they can carry gear for multiple day trips.
We have run inflatable pontoon fishing boats through class IV whitewater and used them to effectively fish stillwaters. We have packed them into remote waters like the Black Canyon and run them down narrow rivers to gain access to stretches of water that are out of wading distance and off limits to bigger boats.
There are numerous different brands and styles of boats with some being limited to lakes and mild rivers and others being capable of tearing through whitewater. Scroll down to read more about pontoon fishing boats.
The Fish Cat 9IR running rapids.
Pontoon Boat Fishing Techniques There are several different approaches when fishing from a pontoon. When you are on stillwater the technical side of handling the boat is minimal but when you are in moving water the game changes. You must be able to control the boat while casting and landing fish. We created this page after spinning down rivers with line tangled everywhere. Click the header to read more about the techniques we use.
Portability is Important Portability is key with these personal fishing boats. After packing heavy frames down long trails we have come to the conclusion that lighter is better. This section is dedicated to the most portable boats. We have also covered storage and transportation options that minimize setup time. Although most pontoon boats can be set up quickly when they are completely broken down, it is nice to shed a few minutes off the time when you are moving from river to river and getting started on cold mornings.
Watermaster Boats These boats are not true pontoons and they probably belong on the rafts page but they can do everything a pontoon can and they are more compact. We have grown to love the Watermaster boats because of the portability, durability and the great customer service. We use these boats on a regular basis and they are the first that come to mind when someone asks about which pontoon to buy.
Fish Cat Pontoons Fish Cat boats are made by Outcast Inflatables and we have used them for years. The 9-IR has been a got to boat and the frame remains on the roof rack throughout the summer. They have several different models as well as a line of float tubes and full size rafts. We have bonded with their pontoon fishing boats and found them to be durable and reliable. Dave Scadden These really are the cream of the crop in the pontoon market. Dave Scadden is the founder of North Fork Outdoors and he uses unique design concepts to create some awesome boats. Look through their catalog and pictures and you will soon understand why they are on top. Their models are whitewater capable, compact and can be adjusted for a number of different fly fishing situations.
Creek Company Pontoon Boats Creek Company has a bunch of different models. We have only spent a few days with their boats but they handled well on stillwaters and would be effective for river fishing. In addition to the single person models, they have boats for two and three people. Of course we would prefer a drift boat or full size raft for three people but it is hard to beat the portability.
Water Skeeter Water Skeeter has some great boats with several models that we wouldn't hesitate to tackle whitewater. The boats look great and they have a very stable platform. The design concepts are obviously geared towards fly fisherman and they are among the few pontoons that you can stand comfortably and fish from. If you are in the market for a new boat, these should be near the top of you list.
Bucks Bags We would not put their lower end models in the same league as some of the latter boats but they are perfectly functional and quality boats. The higher end models are eye catching look like something we should test on the river. They have similar designs to the Water Skeeter boats and although we have only seen them on display, they look like great boats.
Trout Unlimited Boats The Trout Unlimited pontoon fishing boats are good quality but we wouldn't take them through whitewater. Actually we would but we wouldn't recommend anyone else does. The boats are comfortable and great for floating easy rivers and fishing stillwaters. They have a nice storage system and we really like the open storage pouch on one side of the boat.
Rod Holders Many pontoons come with a rod holder but it never hurts to have a spare. There numerous different options when it comes to fly rod holders and we have dedicated this page to holders for pontoon fishing boats, drift boats, rafts and jet boats. Click the header if you are trying to find the right holder for your boat.
