Many anglers will find a company that they like and stick with them but some prefer to collect a variety of different rods. Scroll to the bottom if you want to write your own fly rod reviews.
Choosing a fly rod for the first time may seem overwhelming but you can break down your needs, test a few models and make a purchase without much headache. It becomes more difficult as you gain experience and begin to realize the value of a good rod.
Then you must discern between different actions, materials and determine which rod will fit your casting style and fishing purpose. Fly rods are very advanced and there are numerous different materials available.
Graphite is the most common but we also like glass and bamboo. In a addition to the material, there are a variety of different tapers and actions. The beginner should use a medium or medium fast action and advanced anglers will choose a specific action to accommodate their casting style. We have tested and reviewed a number of different rods to help find the best fit for you.
ROSS is well known for their reels and their recent move into the rod market is making a big impact. They have designed several nice models that we use on a regular basis. The rods meet a great price point and we have been more than pleased with the durability. In fact, we spent a year abusing one rod beyond belief. The rod should have broke in the first month of use but it took an entire year before a double bead stone fly delivered the finishing blow near the tip of the rod. Scott is rooted in the fly rod market and has a devout following. Their rods are among the best you will find and they are backed by an all star Pro Staff. One of our favorite things about the company is the fact that they do not overload you with options and make slight updates to a rod that warrant a new name and marketing scheme every year. There are several companies that do this and although they produce some great rods, we find it annoying. Scott has several rod models that are built to perfection and they stick with the rods that work.
Sage is one of the companies that makes a great product but changes their line on a regular basis. We love their rods and as a company, they have a loyal following. Sage rods tend to be extra smooth and they are a joy to cast. We really like a couple of their models as dry fly rods because they are so nice to cast and they have some excellent choices that will cover most species. Orvis Fly Rod Reviews
Like all of their products the rods are high quality. The company has a huge following and their rod users tend to also use their lines, reels, waders, boots, etc. Orvis has some great rods and a few with mixed reviews. We have fished and cast most of their models and found them to be very good although they do not top our list. Click the header to read more from our Orvis fly rod reviews.
These rods were not even on our radar until a rep walked into a fly shop and put them in our hands. We proceeded to cast every model in the parking lot and take a few out on the river. We have really enjoyed a couple of these rods and have found them to bit a good fit for a variety of skill levels. Click the header to read our Cortland fly rod reviews.
Winston rods meet the same high standard as Sage and Scott. They have some incredible products and loyal following. The Montana company is a small building located in Twin Bridges. You wouldn't know it from the outside but they have some magic in there. The first thing that catches the eye about their rods is the incredible look. They look like a custom made rod that required many hours of labor. The next thing is the way the cast and after that you will have to catch a few fish and let us know.
Echo fly rods and Airflo lines are a product of Rajeff sports. We think rods that are designed by World Casting Champion are a good place to focus our attention. Tim Rajeff is an accomplished caster and his rods reflect his casting style. They are powerful and capable of throwing some serious line.
Diamondback Fly Rod Reviews
Diamonback has a couple of sweet sticks with some really attractive reel seats and great action. They have rodsfit to meet a variety of demands and we really like the custom look of their products. The style is not flashy but it is artistic and slick. We really like the Diamonglass model for fishing spring creeks and stillwaters.
Redington has some nice rods that fit the same moderate price points as Ross and Cortland. They also have a pretty nice line of waders, reels and clothing. The company is based in the northwest and their rods are built to satisfy most anglers. They are objects of function and can handle some pretty heavy use. We have tested some of their rods and enjoy the quality. We really like a couple of the models and completely fell in love with a couple of the models. Temple Fork has struck a nerve in the industry and we see a lot of their rods on the water. Most of the customers are happy with the products and the customer service. Check out our reviews to see which models we liked and which ones we loved.
One of our favorite all time rods was a Powell until a dirty thief broke the car window and snatched it one night. Powell makes a couple of awesome fly rods that are all too unknown. Their spinning and bait casting rods are fairly popular and the technology used in the fly rods is unique and it creates a smooth and powerful tool. We like St. Croix fly rods for their durability and performance. The Wisconsin company has several models that are made in the USA and not only do they look good, they are capable fly fishing tools. They also meet several different price points that will suit a variety of anglers.
We like small companies with high quality products. March Brown occupies a small niche for extremely high quality fly rods. They are the kind of company that you can call on the phone and the owner might answer and talk fishing for a while. Their products are not cheap but if you are looking for something unique and beautiful, they are worth taking a look. Read the fly rod reviews here.
G Loomis Rods
They are light and fast and will hold their own against any other model. G Loomis manufactures top quality rods and they should be on your radar if you are shopping brands. We like the feel of these sticks and when matched with a lightweight reel, they are fun to fish.
This company occupies a special niche in the market. They make a standard rod model but it is the switch, spey and surf rods that should catch your attention. They are high quality, attractive fishing tools. Click the header to read the fly rod reviews.
When you think of fly rods, Eagle probably doesn't come to mind but they do own Wright and McGill so you could say that there are some fine Eagle Claw rods. They make several different models including rods for freshwater, saltwater, spey casting and for women. In addition to rods the company makes reels, bags and apparel.
South Bend Fishing Rods
South Bend has a long history in the fishing industry and they mass produce rods for big brand names. These are not are favoriterods but we feel they are worthy of reviews because of the popularity. The rods are typically purchased through stores like Bass Pro Shops and Cabela's and they use a variety of different names and logos. Click the header to read more about South Bend fly rods.
If you have never fished glass you are missing out on something special. Fiberglass rods were the standard before the development of graphite materials and although the rods are not produced at the rate they once were, they still have a place in fly fishing as well as a small cult like following. Click the header to learn why we love fishing glass.
Browning Fly Rods
Browning has had a small presence in the rod market beginning with fiberglass and transitioning into a couple of graphite models. There are not a large number of the Browning fly rods out there and you are more likely to find their spinning models through Bass Pro Shops. Click the header to read more about Browning Fly Rods.
We are not going to throw out any awards for these rods but they are decent for an entry level fly fisher on a budget. If we were going to film a movie scene that required breaking a fly rod over our knee, we could do it for less than one hundred dollars with one of these. They do remind us of our first rods when we were kids and those got the job done for more than a few years. Click the header link to read our fly rod reviews.
Packs rods are a specialty item that occupy an important segment in the market. The rods break down into incredibly small packages for special use. You would think the segments might effect the casting but most of these maintain a high level of performance.
