Fishing Canoes are Fun!

Not only are fishing canoes classy, it is fun and effective in the water. The canoe requires practice in weight shifting and balance but once you get the feel for it, you may not want to fish any other way. Canoes can be used to navigate rivers, lakes and ponds.
They will glide through skinny water and take on rapids with skilled navigators. Lewis and Clark used canoes and you should at least go for a test drive to see how it feels. Fly fishing from a canoe is a classic approach to the sport. Canoes have been utilized by fly fisherman for eons and although they have some competition from modern pontoons, rafts and kayaks, they are far from irrelevant. Read on to find out more about fishing canoes and why they are so great.

Fly Fishing from a Canoe

Fishing from a canoe is an experience every angler should experience at least once. Tweed caps and corn cob pipes are not necessary but proceed if you must. There are a few important points to learn before you jump in a canoe for the first time, primarily safety measures. Canoes can be tipsy and stabilizers are never a bad idea for the rookie. Once you take off the training wheels, you will find yourself gliding around, stalking fish and having a great time on the water. Best Fishing Canoes

The best canoe is the one you have (or have access to in our case). There are several great choices out there including a few handcrafted beauties. In this section we will examine what we think are the best canoes for fly fishing in a variety of different water types and situations.

Old Town Canoe

Is there any other? Well, there are more than a few other great canoe brands but Old Town has been around the block and they continue to make a quality product. In addition to comfortable and stylish canoes, they make kayaks and have a mind towards fishing and tradition. Click the header to read our Old Town reviews.

Pelican Canoes

Pelican has several canoe designs with a specialized recreation model geared towards hunting and fishing. This would be a great combination boat for waterfowl hunting and fly fishing. The canoe has a variety of built in features that any angler would find attractive without sacrificing aesthetic value.

Aluminum Canoe

Aluminum canoes do not look nearly as good as wood or fiberglass but they can take a beating. We had an old aluminum canoe that had flown off the the roof on a highway and was dropped down a few steep slopes. It might have a dent or two but it keeps on going and probably will forever. Read on to see why aluminum might be a good choice for you.

Fiberglass Canoe

Fiberglass is a common material used for canoe and drift boat construction. The material is durable, lightweight and it is smooth in the water. Although it is not bullet proof like aluminum, it looks better, paddles better and holds it's own in the durability department. Click the header to read more about fiberglass fishing canoes.
